JT LeRoy (Savannah Knoop) book

Hello all,

I read from today's Metro that Savannah knoop (aka JT LeRoy) has published a book "Girl Boy Girl" (Seven Stories Press) about her 'fake' life as a celebrity male transvestite -- her/his story came up as we discussed authorship at the GPP class. If someone is interested.

Have a great vacation (or "vacation") everybody!

--- handout text?

-- 'BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?'

During this Autumn we have been playing with various ideas of 'spectacle'; what would our stage spectacle look like? Which elements would we include in it?
nine bodies
contrasts
different rhythms
excess
chance
having fun
breaking audience expectations
doing it 'wrong'
on stage
?

Come and see the result.

Everything (Almost?!)

Hi everyone,
sorry if any of the following is a bit repetitive, but I'll just put down everything we have so far.

SOCIETY OF THE SPECTACLES
Music as the audience walks in (Piano Music, slow pace)
Lights are di onstage, slightly brighter on the line of chairs, where there are already the cases. There is a mike, downstage, audience left corner.
Music fades out.
Performers walk in in a line, stand in front of the chairs, facing the audience.
As they sit down, lights fade out on the audience. Performers turn to their right, grab the cases, sit down at the same time, open the cases, leave them open on their knees as they put spectacles on. After the spectacles are on, music starts (The more I see you...). Performers hold the cases with both hands, stay still for the whole lenght of the song. SPECTACLES 1
As the song finishes, performers take off the spectacles, put them in the cases and (sudden change of rhythm) take chairs to the back, quickly.
All exit (seats side). As performers exit, blackout.
After a few seconds of blackout, in the dark, there is the sound of carrot crunching (Katja). In the meantime, Owen and Edie get ready. When Owen and Edie are ready, and in position onstage, carrot crunching stops.
WIG AND TRAINGLE SCENE (In the meantime, everyone gets dressed)
After the last spotlight on Owen (black tongue), Edie and Owen exit (seats side), and lights come on (WE NEED TO CHANGE THE LIGHTS FOR THE CAKE SCENE, MAYBE?)
Edie walks in with a flag, and stands slightly downstage, left side (near the desk). After a few seconds, Elena walks in, stands still downstage, middle). Silence for a few seconds (10? 15?).
As the table comes in (already set with cake ingredients, carried by Dimitris and Joonas), music starts (Funny music, hectic). Dimitris and Joonas make cakes, Joonas examines them and throws them at the back (careful with curtains!). After a few seconds of this, Gemma walks in showing the 'beautiful cake' to the audience, walking with glamour around the stage. She then stops in front of Elena, holding the cake. Elena starts to smasj her head in the cake, slow pace?
As the music ends, Dimitris and Joonas throw table to the back and exit (seats side), Edie exits with flag (desk side). Elena and Gemma stand in the middle of the stage in silence, Elena still smashing the head in the cake, Gemma smiling. (1/2 minutes?). Water people walk in (Edie from desk side, Joonas and Helena from seats side, set the chairs, two bottles of water per chair, and an empty glass. (I didn't see how this has been arranged, sorry!). Edie sets up her seat in the middle of the stage, where Gemma and Elena are, so Gemma is 'forced' to walk back, taking Elena (still smashing her head) to her seat, at the back.
DRINKING WATER SCENE (We need to CHANGE THE LIGHTS FOR THIS SCENE, MAYBE?): Edie and Helena drink and use the dialogue from 'The man who fell to earth,' Elena and Joonas are silent, at the back, Joonas mirroring Edie, Elena mirroring Helena. When the two bottles are emptied, 'You're such an alien' line. Everyone stands up, Edie and Helena bring bottles and glasses to the back, and exit (Edie to seats side, Helena to desk side) as Joonas and Elena take chairs into the line, and then take bottles and glasses at the back. They exit (Joonas to seats side, Elena to desk side).
Lights as in Spectacles 1, Performers walk into the stage in a line. Music (The more I see you...) Same as spectacles 1, but with sunglasses and a banana (Andrew). In the meantime, Owen gets dressed (blue jumper costume), and Elena gets oiled up.
As performers close their cases, the podium starts to get in, music starts (Techno), and spectacles performers take chairs to the back.
When Owen has parked Elena, lights change into flashing lights. Owen grabs mike, has celery and milk with him. BOXER SCENE. After Owen's talk he puts the mike back.
While performers exit (desk side), lights change. Spotlight on mike, Katja and Edie walk in and eat carrots with mike. In the meantime, Andrew, Helena and Dimitris set up for Sailor Boy scene, Joonas does push ups, Gemma crosses the stage on a bike, from the seats side to the desk side. (We need to change the lights sightly, so that there is a bit more light on Joonas)
When the set up is finished, performers are ready, Katja and Edie nod at each other, take the mike to Andrew, and collect the sacks of petals as they exit (seats side), Joonas exits (seats side).
SAILOR BOY SCENE.
When the music ends, everyone exit (Andrew and Dimitris seats side, Helena Desk side). The image is left onstage for a few minutes (1/2?).
Dimitris enters with incence, takes the mike back to the corner. As performers come in from both sides, one at the time, there is the sound of the triangle from offstage (desk side) Everyone puts petals on the image, ritualistically. Helena, Gemma, Elena, Owen will enter from desk side. Gemma will exit from seats side. Andrew is the last performer, and will enter with a weelbarrel full of beige sawdust (and a spade?). Andrews empties the weelbarrel on the image and exits (seats side). In the meantime, Gemma, Joonas, Katja and Elena get into sacks, Owen gets dressed.
As Owen walks in with a sack (Elena), music starts (tone of Take my Breath away). Owen takes the mike centre stage, Dimitris carries the other sacks in (Katja, Joonas, Gemma). All the sacks are dotted around the space. As Owen starts to sing, lights change (spotlight on Owen and dimmer lights onstage). As Owen finishes the song, he takes the mike back to the corner, and exits, lights change (dim lights onstage). Cockledoodleeewhatever soundtrack begins, while sacks are still, (slightly moving?) onstage. Cockleewhatever finishes. Performers enter (lights chage and The more I see You song begins), as sacks people get out of the sacks. Performers dotted around the stage, each doing an action that recalls their character/performance. First Lalalala in the song, performers leave theor actions behind, throw props at the back and line up (as in spectacles, without chairs). Second Lalalala in the song, performers do a neverending bow. Music ends, performers walk backwards (still bowing) and pile up with the shit at the back.
Blackout.
Dim blue lights on the pile of shit and performers.
Houselights on.
Audience leaves (performers don't move until the audience has left!)
Performers clear up and get wasted in the Boiler Room.

Update update...

Hello all,
Here is the revised structure after our meeting in the (frrrrreezing) Bolier Room this evening:

Spectacles (1) Everyone involved.

All chairs thrown onto pile.
Blackout.
Everyone changes into "costume".

Wig/Triangle (1)

Props for Cake scene are brought on and "presented".

Cake.

Tablecloth and contents are thrown onto pile.
One table is also thrown onto pile.
Four chairs taken to remianing table.

Water Drinking.

Tablecloth and contents are (carefully!) thrown onto pile.
The four chairs are pushed to the front.
Katja, Andrew, Gemma and Edie enter as previous scene is tidied away.

Spectacles (2) Banana.

Owen and Elena enter as Spectacle wearers exit.

Boxer.

Katja and Edie eat carrots at mic as petals are placed.
When petals are ready, Katja and Edie exit, handing mic to Andrew and taking the sacks and throwing them on the pile.

Sailor Boy.

Andrew exits. Helena and Dimitrios pause, collect petals and step forward slowly.
They sprinkle petals on the angel image.
Andrew eneters with wheelbarrow full of sawdust and buries the image.

(This is as far as we got. According to original idea, the Legs will follow, then Wig/Triangle (2), Sacks and Song, Chorus Line, Spectacles (3) THE END! Oh, and we can chuck a bike or two in for good measure...)

Hope all this makes sense, but I do feel it's all coming together nicely!

p.s. Andrew, I love the invite, it's brilliant!

See you all soon, love and spectacles,
Edie xxx

Hi everyone!
Joonas, I like the idea, I'll have a look on youtube for an English version of The Little Mermaid by Tuesday.
I have 16 clear blue bottles, enough?
Cake people, I'll have 2 whipped cream cans, one is already on campus, and I'll have the paper plates. I think there is a carton of custard left from the other day, and Joonas will have some jam, right? Sounds like fun!
I'll try and see if tomorrow I can find the boxer hat, will let you know!
Love, see you soon

drinking water -suggestions

Hello,
yesterday after the class Edie had a good idea: each of us drinkers pick arbitrary lines from some source to be repeated during our 'drinking game', e g: Helena: phrases from a vegetarian cookbook, Edie: lines from porn movie(s), Joonas: lines from Man Who Fell to Earth, Elena: lines from Disney's Little Mermaid or from Kenneth Anger film(s)... (or from whatever source we want)
let's try to find and pick 4 or 5 lines for Tuesday rehearsal..?
best,
joonas

Amazingness...because we can

Helena and Andrew,

i saw the vid and it looks great! you seemed to have managed to keep the essence of it true to its original and yet consolidate it with your 2 images that repeat and speak to each other. You both look amazing!! and i feel moved. I am happy there is time to reflect in this moment of our group show...

Katja: thanks for putting up all the info --its great! didn't we do well?? :-)

Burial People: Your legs have arrived. They are in a black bag and pillow case ontop of the locker. Please take good care of them. They need to be watered about twice a week.

Everyone on the MA...i am waking up with ideas, feeling excited all the time...!Can't wait til Tuesday!

Sailor Boy rehearsal video 20/11

some notes from today

hello lovelies

thanks for a great if exhausting day. i've written down as much as i can remember from our conversations today. please feel free to add, amend, edit, correct! thought it would be a good idea to get all this down asap. please read through, i've added questions, notes, and all that, please have a look and respond on the blog perhaps? also, a reminder of the propos lists and the schedule, but as i say, it may all have altered.
who will have time to look into sawdust - Did you say you could, Gemma?
Andrew very klindly said he'd play with the design of a little invitation, we should think about a title? perhaps we could use an image of spectacles?
Helena has very kindly volunteered to check out space and tech stuff such as mics, please let her know if there's something else.

kisses
k

Helena's fantasy performance

Thick layer of sand all over the stage. Dim cold Lights. One girl is standing in the middle wearing only underwear, carrying a pot with a red flower. In strobe light the others appear, jumping, running etc. They are dressed like: one wears only trousers, the other only jumper, only hat, only gloves, etc. (not naked but in underwear). They disappear. Dim light. She leaves the flower next to her and digs with her hands. A buried body appears. She cleans it from the sand slowly. She plants the flower behind his head and she stays there at her knees. The others come again. Each of them carries a flower (the same one). They stand for a while. Then they plant the flowers. Strobe light again. They start jumping. She doesn’t move at first. Then she starts jumping with them. Strobe stops. Brighter light. The flowers are destroyed. Light focuses on the “buried” body. Each of the group takes little sand, they come and through it on the laying body and they go back to their places. She lays behind the body like an embryo. He (the body) stands up, goes behind her and stands. One by one the “people” come inside take off the piece of clothing they wear; they give it to him and leave. He puts it on. When he is completely dressed, stands for a while, takes a little sand, throws it to her and leaves. The light remains for a while on the body. Fade out.

See you all soon
Best

another vision!

No late comers
Performers don’t talk to the audience before the show (and only at specified points during)
The performance will not be more than 57mins long.

The audience enters and the whole group are lined up stage front. They are holding the spectacles, when the audience sit, they all put on the spectacles and stand there. music plays.

The stage is half covered in bark at back/ front half is covered in a reflective sheeting.

Performers bare in mind throughout that the task is that they walk to the front or middle, an present what it is we are presenting, be it an image or action or text. This is a job.

...One person is buried under the bark, wearing pink spiky hat that protrudes. They get out of the turf after 15mins into the show.

..Someone hops through the stage to the front, and then continues hopping leaving opposite side.

The lights work in 2 simple ways: a spotlight/ full stage and black out. Or: disco lights and blackout.

Individuals performances are presented one after another (as in list from board on thurs), intersected with hopping, watering legs, hop-dancing -and varied music(not sure yet?)

Extras:
Elena hangs upside down in boxing outfit at one point, boxing outwards..
Joonas and Dimitris hold pieta. Gemma enters in Bardsley catwalk outfit and manipulates the pieta.

someone hops on with a cake at some point...and places it on a pedastool

waste and mess continues to be brushed to the back throughout.

someone's job is to continue cleaning the reflective surface throughout.

I could go on….and on..

Owen. in transit. Swansea- London Paddignton

I have a vision

Imagine... performers walk in and stand on the platform at the back of the stage. Each dresses up (or down?!) and helps someone to do it, too. There is no music, the performers chat quietly, as if they were still behind the scenes. They they take their positions, very cerimoniously. A performer is on the 'cage' upside down, and another walks nervously, in front of it. Four performers sit on four chairs in the middle of the stage and wear spectacles. The music starts and all the actions begin, the boxer, the hysterical 'presenter,' performers with spectacle stare intensely at the audience. The scene slowly 'decades' while a new one seems to be prepared onstage, a spotlight on each side of the stage, and two performers, one wearing black leather clothes and sunglasses, and the other wearing a wig, blowing flour into the coolored light. Spotlights alternate. Lights comes up and a new scene takes place: three performers around a table, mouths bounded, upstage, right, while the recording almost covers the music, while on the left a scene from 'sailor boy' takes place, also involving a lot of petals. Suddenly, someone on a bike crosses the stage and disappears again. The scene then moves to a burial of a performer who is not 'dead' and holds a big jar of water and a glass. Around him, two performers are trying to bury him, while three other performers drink water with him, at the same rhythm. The water drinking is excessive, the performers almost feel sick. The scene than changes again, and while another performer is trying to get on the cage, four performers sit around a floor-level round table (like the ones you find in Chinese restaurants, on top of the big table, that you can turn around and grab any plate). On the table there are different cakes, and while the table turn around, the performers smash their heads and faces into the cakes. At the same time, there will be a performer eating carrots and walki9ng around the stege, while other performers are presenting various objects.
During the piece, whoever is not busy with the 'main scene', is either planting and watering legs into the sand on the floor, or is eating carrots hysterically, or presenting objects cerimoniously, or getting changed on the top of the platform, or hysterically and obsessively cleaning the floor. Constantly, during the piece, there will be objects falling from the ceiling (rails), such as petals, glitter, flour, small pieces of paper... The music will change during the piece, but it will always be somehow 'inappropriate' to what is being presented (classical music in an hysteric scene, hard rock during the burial, and so on...)
The piece ends with all performers somehow 'physically changed by the piece' (either dirty, or wet, or with a certain outfit...), joining together on the top of the platform, singing a Christmas song.
Sorry if I went over the 200 words, hope you like it!
See you all soon,
Elena

GPP Performance Fantasy (Joonas)

ensemble
nine bodies
Opening scene: stage floor covered with white sand (or similar material), bodies lying on the sand, not moving. A bit like a still-life landscape painting which then starts to live, evolve into a spectacle of material excess and flaws

everything that is brought onstage stays on stage; I love the idea of the cumulation of objects

us to explore in group(s): which kinds of 'bodily excess' can we discover?
excessive--
eating
drinking
singing
talking
moving
touching
dressing-up?
More?

And us to explore 'flaws', too:
flaws in--
speaking
moving one's body and our bodies together
touching
moving objects
using objects?
More?

--> to use our findings in the group scenes based on the 'main components' (posted to the blog 14/11). Any scene could involve both 'excessive' and 'flawed' acts. I would like to experience & see two or more scenes happening simultaneously -> links between those acts (communication, juxtaposition/contradiction etc).

Audience would not only see and hear but also taste (cake, milk?) and smell (cake, milk, wet sand?). I like the idea of giving something material to each spectator, perhaps objects from the prop pile

End scene would involve the whole group: e g everyone going back to the opening scene still-life postures & positions (which is not possible since the stage will be loaded with objects and material at this point -> new 'closing image')

best,
Joonas
